Imphal, June 05 2018:
All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) president Manjit Sarangthem has called upon the student community and youth of the State to take pioneering roles in protecting the environment, while observing that the society will no longer be healthy, clean and prosperous if the menace of environmental degradation are not curtailed at the earliest.
He was delivering his presidential speech at the World Environment Day observation, organized by AMSU Imphal East District Committee at the conference hall of Maharaja Bodhachandra College, Palace Compound, Imphal.
Expressing concern that the negative impact of environmental degradation could also be witnessed tremendously in varied ways in the State (including climate change and degeneration of lakes, rivers and water bodies) the AMSU president lamented that activities of deforestation in the hills have also increased and the pollution level of major lakes and rivers cannot be minimised.
Claiming that excessive dependence on plastics and plastic products is another reason for the degrading Loktak lake, he appealed all to avoid using plastics or polythene bags as much as possible.
Attending as guest of honour in the function, HOD of the Environmental Science, DM College of Science Dr K Mani Bhusan Singh asserted that the people of Manipur rely tremendously on Chinese and Burmese products which is a bad sign.
He noted that China is the biggest plastic producers and products from China and Burma are dominating the markets in Manipur and India.
Expressing disappointment over the failure of the State Government to prohibit plastic bags in the State, he stated that no concrete steps have been taken up by the authorities concerned, although the State Government proclaimed to have banned plastic bags last year.
Stressing on the infliction caused to the society and human being by adopting new and modern lifestyles that solely depend on the convenience and pleasures for human beings, Mani exorted all to adopt an eco-friendly culture and lifestyle.
The function was graced by IMC Mayor L Lokeshwor Singh and also attended by Maharaja Bodhchandra Singh College Principal Dr M Chandra Singh.
