8 AR jawans killed; 9 injured in NSCN (K) attack

At least eight Assam Rifles personnel were reportedly killed and another nine injured when suspected NSCN (K) attacked them on Sunday afternoon in Mon district of Nagaland.
Sources said a powerful IED exploded near Doupo village under Tizit subdivision of Mon district where the Assam Rifles personnel were coming to fetch water.
Immediately after the explosion, the suspected NSCN (K) cadres opened fire on them, killing eight of them on the spot and injured the nine.
The incident happened at about 2:30 pm, the sources said.
Another source said that one personnel from Territorial Army and an NSCN (K) cadre were also killed in the incident.
Another report said the team of 23 Assam Rifles came under heavy fire from the NSCN (K) cadres who used sophisticated weapons in the attack, injuring two jawans on the spot.
The source added that the Assam Rifles team was conducting a search in the area following intelligence reports that an unspecific number of armed cadres of NSCN (K) were moving in the jungle area.
The Assam rifles team returned the fire, resulting in a gun battle between the two sides.
The exchange of fire lasted for about half an hour, the report added.
