Imphal, June 18 2010:
Alleging that troops of Assam Rifles in civies committed atrocities against one Isaac and his families in the wee hours of June 17, Ukhrul-based Tangkhul Coordinating Committee has condemned the incident besides stating that a formal complaint would be lodged to authority concerned.
A TCC statement issued by its Media and Publicity Wing in-charge T Pheiray contended that at around 2 am yesterday, AR personnel in two Gypsys without registration numbers broke down the door and frisked Isaac's house apart from beating up the children who were asleep before dragging them out on the road.
Isaac reportedly runs a hotel attached to the house which is located at Finch Corner a junction that divides Phungyar to Kamjong and Ukhrul.
On hearing the commotion, women folk from the neighbourhood trooped out from their homes with 'zarmei' (torch) to protest the inhumane treatment inspite of which the AR officers also in civil clothes told them (women) to 'go home and rest', the Committee claimed while adding that the women folk stayed put till the crack of dawn.
On being enquired, the AR officers said they were from the Shangshak post, situated about 7-8 kms from Finch Corner and even pretended to drive away in the direction of Shangshak only to return back after more than four hours and head on the Ukhrul side, detailed the Committee quoting the women vigilantes as saying.
Expressing that ploy of the AR to confuse the womenfolk undermines status of an officer of the Indian Armed forces, the Committee described as 'disheartening to learn and observe cowardly act of some Indian Armed Forces indulging in harassment of innocent civilians'.
Conveying that TCC functionaries visited the spot today and would lodge a complaint to relevant higher-ups for necessary action, Pheiray also posed "where there is mutual and peaceful co-existence shared between the people and the armed forces, especially the Assam Rifles 'why provoke peace ?'" .
