'Manipur can be developed into an agricultural state'

Imphal, August 16 2011:
Since Manipur has abundant source of water resources, it can be developed into an agricultural state, said Abhinash Kakde, National Office In-Charge of the Kishan Khet Majdoor Congress today while speaking in a press meet held at Congress Bhavan, Imphal.
He said that the congress will press the Centre to initiate various schemes for the welfare and development of agriculture in the state.
Manipur is facing shortage of food items since there is little productivity as compared to the population of
the state.
Right now the state is depending on food items imported from other parts of the country.
Moreover pisciculture can also be developed in the state to a great extent, he said.
H Nabakumar, Chairman Kishan Khet Majdoor Congress, Manipur who also attended the press meet said that the minor irrigation system in the state, which is the backbone of agriculture, has totally failed.
There is need for the concerned officials to put efforts in developing the minor irrigation system and take up initiatives to outreach the farmers in availing loans.
