Man dies, locals rise against VDF

Imphal, August 16 2011:
Alleging the VDF personnel of assaulting a civilian and throwing him into the Kongba River, local people of Khabeisoi and Chairenthong in the morning of August 15 area rose against the state police and VDF personnel, resorting police to fire tear gas shells to disperse the mob.
The victim was identified as Md Isak Ahmed (40) son of Md Gulam of Khabeisoi 7 MR Gate.
According to VDF personnel posted near Chairenthong, the victim Isak was a tablet abuser.
He avoided them and jump into the river when they tried to seize him.
On the contrary, family members of Isak told reporters that Isak was not a tablet abuser.
He was a rikshaw driver who earns his daily wages.
He was dropped into the river by the VDF personnel after assaulting him.
Condemning the act of the VDF personnel locals of Khabeisoi yesterday blocked the road demanding justice.
Police resorted to firing tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.
Protestors on the other hand pelted stones to the police team in retaliation and damaged a police vehicle.
Large number of local villagers today staged a sit in protest against the police atrocity demanding termination of the accused personnel and remove posting of police, VDF and CDO personnel from the area.
