Ukhrul, August 02 2014 :
Residents in Ukhrul town were jolted from their sleep after a few rounds of gun shots were fired near the Police Reserve reportedly by "police commandos" at around 10.30 PM Friday.
The townsmen on condition of anonymity, residing in and around the Town Hall adjacent to Police Reserve, said some security personnel who were on night patrol resorted to blank firing at around 10.30 PM last night.
Locals could not ascertain as to why the shots were fired and sought explanation for the Friday incident.
On an enquiry about the reported gunshots by media today, Ukhrul Deputy Commissioner Modak Hrisheekesh Arvind denied any such incidents in the town.
Locals in the neighbourhood, however, informed that two rounds of shot were fired near the Gandhi Chowka site situated around 10 m from the Police Reserve.
The Ukhrul district remained shutdown till midnight as Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) imposed a 24-hour total bandh yesterday.
The Tangkhul organisations have taken serious exception to the firing incident, while condemning that the situation has caused "fear and confusion" among the civilians.
In a press communiqu issued on Saturday evening, the TNL alleged that Manipur government has been intentionally resorted to militaristic tactics under the shadow of prohibitory order clamped in the district headquarters.
TNL has blamed the "police commandos" for the unwarranted incident, and appealed to the public to remain cautious
of their activities.
Public in Ukhrul has been experiencing a record 21-day of continuous imposition of section 144 under CrPC Act.
It is arguably the longest prohibitory order ever faced by the townsmen.
