4 plus tonnes of seized Ganja destroyed

Imphal, June 28 2014 :
More than 4 tonnes of contraband Ganja (Marijuana/ cannabis) seized by Narcotics and Affairs of Border (NAB) and Manipur Police during the period between 1997 and 2013 were destroyed by setting them on fire at Pungdongbam Mamang Chingkhong in Imphal East district on Saturday.
The huge quantity of Ganja worth more than Rs 20 lakh in local market was consigned to flame by a special committee headed by Kh Chandramani, DIG (Range 4).The Ganja destroyed by the committee was seized by personnel of NAB and Manipur Police from various places of the State during the period between 1997 and 2013 .
Personnel of NAB and State police reportedly seized altogether 4110 kg of ganja between 1997 and 2013 who also registered 32 cases.

Few days back, a court order had been issued for disposing off the seized contraband materials which were in the custody of NAB and Manipur police since 1997 .
Speaking to mediapersons on the sidelines of destroying the seized contraband Ganja, SP of NAB and Spokesperson of Manipur Police S Goutam informed NAB has so far disposed of 46 cases related to seizure of contraband items like Ganja, opium and heroin.
Altogether 32 different cases were registered for the 4110.80 kg of Ganja which was destroyed today, he added.
NAB officer in-charge (OC) RK Bikram, Additional SP in-charge of law and order Md Huisne Jamal and Lamlai police station officer in-charge Dev Kumar were also present during disposal of the seized contraband Ganja by making a big bonfire at a place known as Kangla Haobi Lampak in Pungdongbam Mamang Chingkhong in the afternoon.
According to sources, the court had also issued an order to dispose off 19.88 kg of opium (connected with 6 cases) and 5.55 kg of heroin (involving 8 cases).
But these substances were not been disposed off today as the consent of higher authority is awaited.
