The Government of Manipur has made all necessary arrangements to conduct the Panchayat elections in the state with promulgation of an ordinance in the regard very soon.
According to a highly reliable source, Department of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj (RD & PR) and Law Department, Government of Manipur promulgated the ordinance instead of amending the Manipur Panchayati Raj Act.
A cabinet meeting will be convened in this regard on May 11 for its approval.
The source further revealed that promulgation of the ordinance was necessary after problems arise in the delimitation process following the Government notification issued on September 11 bringing four Panchayat constituencies of Sadar Hills namely Koubru Leikha, Toribari, Kalapahar, Santalbari and Parasain under the Sadar Hills District Autonomous Council.
The State Government also took the decision of promulgating the ordinance in consideration of the approaching expiry of the present term of the Gram Panchayats.
After the promulgation of the ordinance is approved by the State Cabinet and the Governor gives his assent, the election of the members of the Zila Parishad and Pradhans would be conducted in the month of October this year, the source disclosed.
The proposed meeting of the Cabinet on May 11 is also likely to give its approval to re-imbursement of the amount incurred on treatment of the wife of Home Minister Gaikhangam, who passed away recently, the source added.
