Covid-19 victim's kin ransacks JNIMS, condemned

Imphal, June 06 2021: The relatives of a Covid-19 patient admitted to JNIMS hospital destroyed the hospital properties after the patient passed away on Saturday.

The deceased patient has been identified as Rk ningol Okram ongbi Gyspy Devi (33) w/o Okram Ajit Singh of Singjamei Kshetri Leikai.

According to a report, the patient was admitted to JNIMS hospital on May 23 after testing Covid-19 positive and had been under treatment.

However, she passed away on Saturday afternoon.

On learning of her death, her relatives started attacking the hospital and destroyed several medical equipment, causing mass hysteria amongst other patients in the hospital.

Meanwhile, Teachers' Association JNIMS has condemned the attack at the ICU of JNIMS and destruction of ventilators and other equipment by relatives of a Covid-19 patient who passed away at the hospital on Saturday evening.

According to a statement issued by the Teachers' Association, such act by the patient party has greatly disheartened the healthcare workers who have been working day and night for the people.

Many health care workers have either passed away or tested positive for Covid-19.Repeated demands have been made for a long time for the police to take action on the matter, along with providing adequate security.

While appreciating the initiatives taken up by the CM to further develop the hospital and provide best health care to patients, the Association appealed to all concerned to regard the service being rendered by health care workers in the prevailing situation and not to repeat such acts in future.

Indian Medical Association (IMA), Manipur State Branch also condemned the act of arson at JNIMS hospital on Saturday.

In a release, IMA Manipur president Dr S Jugindra stated that it is a matter of great shame for the state and insult to the whole medical community that hospital properties were vandalised and a doctor on duty was manhandled at the Covid Ward of JNIMS Hospital on Saturday night following the death of a patient.

The perpetrators of the violence should be given exemplary punishment and booked under the "Manipur Medicare Service Personnel and Medicare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage to Property) Act 2015" and "Epidemic Disease (Amendment) Ordinance 2020", it demanded.

The Association, meanwhile, condoled the untimely demise of Okram (O) Gypsy Devi and shared the grief of the bereaved family.

The Association reiterated that the culprits should be booked and befitting punishment be given failing which it will take up suitable course of action.

If such instances of violence against healthcare personnel and institutions continue without any legal actions against the perpetrators then the whole Covid care may be hindered by these acts of senseless violence, it cautioned.
