Imphal, June 06 2021:
Porompat police have arrested two individuals for vandalising medical equipment including an oxygen ventilator inside a Covid ward at JNIMS Hospital following the death of a Covid positive woman, last night.
It is reported that the woman, about 33 years of age, died at JNIMS Covid Ward at around 11 pm yesterday.
It is said that the two individuals who have been arrested by the police are the husband and sister of the deceased.
On the other hand, family members of the deceased alleged that the woman died of negligence on the part of doctors.
She was admitted to JNIMS on May 23 last.
Some properties of the hospital might be vandalised, but there was never an instance of attacking doctors, nurses and staff of the hospital, they clarified.
It is to be noted here that the CCTV footage of two individuals vandalising medical equipment at JNIMS was circulated on social media, drawing huge criticisms from all over.
Strongly condemning the vandalism, the Indian Medical Association, Manipur State Branch (IMA-MSB) stated that vandalising hospital properties and manhandling doctor on duty on the night of June 5 at the Covid ward of JNIMS by certain individuals following the death of a patient was a matter of great shame for the State and insult to the whole medical community.
A press release issued by IMA-MSB said that the association condemns such a heinous act of violence in hospitals when the State is facing the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic.
The perpetrators of the violence should be given exemplary punishment and booked under the "Manipur Medicare Service Personnel and Medicare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage to Property) Act 2015" and "Epidemic Disease (Amendment) Ordinance 2020," it demanded and cautioned that the association will take up its course of action if the demand is unheeded.
The association, on the other hand, condoled the untimely demise of the patient and shared the grief of the bereaved family.
