Villagers resolve to replace headman for violation of customary law

The villagers of Soraphung have unanimously resolved to replace the incumbent heredity headman, Yaruingam for alleged violation of the Naga customary law.
This was announced during a press conference held today at the office of Ukhrul District Working Journalists' Association in Viewland, Ukhrul district.
Former village secretary Vikhole contested on the indifferent attitude of the village headman Yaruingam and alleged that his conduct attempts to divide the villagers by creating unnecessary tensions among themselves.
He alleged Soraphung villagers have been observing the headman for more than 30 years and supported him but no positive changes has been brought under his leadership.
The villagers are fed up of his dictatorial administration, violation of the village customary law and negligence towards development in the village.
He went on allege that the old primary school building of Soraphung, forest reserve land for the headman and GI water pipe issued by PHED in 2002 were sold out without the consent of the village.
Meanwhile, five persons of Soraphung, who were enjoying the benefit of old age pension were allegedly removed by the headman by giving fake document and claiming that all the individual were expired in 2017.The villagers were disappointed against the alleged conversion of village community hall, constructed under BADP, into his private garage and pig sty, Vikhole asserted.
The villagers thereafter convened an emergency public meeting on August 6 and unanimously resolved to replace headman Yaruingam and the present village secretary to step down.
The villagers have appealed the families and nearest kin of Yaruingam to replace his position and have suggested to inherit the heir of headman from among the families within one month, to be new headman of Soraphung village.
