Imphal, January 16 2013:
Owing to drying up of water sources of Power Generation units in the North East, the production of power in the region has drastically declined.
And the situation in Manipur is worst with general public hardly getting 5 hours of electricity in a day.
But, of course, the localities of 'leaders', where there is round the clock power supply, are an exception.
According to reports obtained from the State Electricity Department, electricity being provided to the general public has been not satisfactory since the production capacity of power in the State is uncertain.
With drying up of major sources of water used for generation of power, only one among the three turbines in Loktak Hydro Electric Power Project is being used during peak hours.
The power share that the State receives from the Power Controlling unit at Shillong is only 35 megawatt during the day and 60 megawatt during night.
If all the consumers in the State are to be provided sufficient power, then the State should posses at least 200 megawatt of power.
However, since there is no source from where the required power could be obtained, people of the State have been facing power shortage for the last many years.
As of now, the State Government has decided to provide electricity to the general public for at least 7 hours in a day, 4 hours during the day and 3 hours during night.
However, the system of providing electricity to the public has been a complete disaster with majority of the consumers getting not more than 5 hours of power supply in a day.
An official of the Electricity Dept said that for the consumers in Imphal city, where facilities of pre-paid system are provided receive 24 hours power supply.
Consumers under Direct Feeder also receive around 15 hours of power supply in a day.
At the moment, the State Government has no plan for purchasing extra power from any generating unit and the Electricity Department has no other option other than to wait for the monsoons for ensuring enough water to generate power.
Until then, the power situation in the State is only going to get worse, the report added.
However, disheartened consumers have pointed out to Hueiyen Lanpao that the people in the locality of Chief Engineer of Power N Sarat have been enjoying at least 12 hours of power supply in a day, even though there is no pre-paid connection system in the area.
Moreover, in places like Keishampat Thokchom Leikai, in the heart of imphal, consumers are supplied with more electricity as compared to other places, which is unfair.
There is no specific rule which says that there should be extra electricity supply to the consumers of Thangmeiband and Keishampat, they complained.
