With reference to the news report published in this daily under the heading "Jiribam tense", Assam Rifles has dismissing the allegation as baseless and clarified that no harassment or torture was meted out to the arrested individual namely M Bijen Singh of Jiribam, Imphal East district.
According to a PRO IGAR (S) release, the individual was apprehended by troops of 22 AR on January 15 since he is an active RPF/PLA cadre and has identified himself as No 1021 Self Styled Sergeant Major M Bijen Singh.
The individual is currently a member of Jiribam Municipal Council however he has accepted to having link with PLA and working for them.
The press release has alleged that the individual has been assaulted/tortured following which he was admitted to Community Health Center (CHC), Jiribam.
It is clarified that the medical case sheet in respect of M Bijen Singh certified by doctors at CHC, clearly state that there are no signs of external injury on the individual, maintained the PRO release.

The individual has been admitted in CHC on complaint of giddiness and not due to any assault or torture by Assam Rifles troops.
The individual was handed over to PS Jiribam on January 15 on an FIR and the individual is currently in police custody.
Publishing unconfirmed reports of such nature is a deliberate attempt to malign the image of Assam Rifles which is doing yeomen service for the people of Jiribam and neighbouring villages by providing a secure environment and assistance in times of natural calamities and accidents, it added.
