Imphal, January 16 2013:
Confirming disbandment of the special Investigation Unit (SIU), SP (IW) K Jayenta has stated that the Unit was set up specifically to investigate vehicle theft cases in the State.
Conceding that there was no Government sanction for setting up SIU, he explained that establishment of the Unit as an internal arrangement under the supervision of Imphal West district police was to strengthen police apparatus to effectively deal with cases of vehicle theft as the police force was stretched to the limit as cases related to vehicle theft, drug smuggling and fake currency rackets began to pile up at different police stations.
Further stating that select cops, including from the City Police were utilised as SIU team members, Jayenta maintained that with SIU personnel having gained appreciable experience the same was disbanded to enable the team members sustain and contribute their expertise at their respective place of posting.
Iterating that the SIU-experienced police personnel will continue to concentrate in checking and cracking vehicle theft cases under the OCs concerned, he conveyed that for cases concerning drugs smuggling there are enough units to handle the cases.
Apart from the State's own Narcotics and Affairs of Borders (NAB), sleuths of Narcotics Control Bureau department of Central Excise and Customs are well versed in tackling smuggling cases, added the SP .
Significantly during its short stint, since May 6 last year, the SIU managed to detect and seize a huge quantity of drugs from different places, the latest being the large haul of drugs worth about Rs 1.4 crore from Tulihal airport on January 11 this year.
With the Government not disclosing the identity of the owner of the drug consignment, anti-drug campaigner AMADA had demanded that the identity be made public.
