K Shyam distributes TLM kits to person with intellectual disabilities

CAF & PD Minister Karam Shyam said that every person, even if differently abled, is endowed with a unique potential and ability and "we should nurture in them the essence of living by showing humanity, love, compassion and encouragement so that they can walk in the society equally with others.
He was speaking as the chief guest at the Teaching Learning Material (TLM) kits distribution programme for persons with intellectual disabilities (Divyangan) at Manipur Press Club today.
The programme was organised by the National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (Divyangyan) (NIEPID) in collaboration with the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Government of Manipur and Relief Centre for the Welfare of Differently Abled Persons, Manipur.
Karam Shyam further expressed that everyone should appreciate persons with disabilities and co-operate with them instead of underestimating them.
"Parents should identify the hidden talents and personalities of children with disabilities and take pride in their calibre.
Let's try to encourage them and give them no room for depression or disappointment", the Minister added.
Dr G Mary Anurupa, Assistant Professor (Paediatrics), NIEPID, Secunderabad said that they try to identify children with intellectual disabilities first and subsequently distribute TLM kits to them as part of the programme.
The programme implemented in 2015 in Manipur is useful in helping them acquire the needed skills, she stated.
Bantee Singh Konthoujam, Joint Director (ICDS), Social Welfare Department, mentioned that the Government is also looking into the concerns and grievances of intellectually disabled persons during Meeyamgi Numit.
Speaking as president of the function, State Commissioner for Disabilities, RK Kumarjit Singh reiterated on the need of extension of exam duration and doubling of allowances for persons with disabilities.
Plan is in the pipeline for carrying out similar programme in Senapati, Kangpokpi and Bishnupur districts of the State, he added.
TLM kits were distributed to persons with intellectual disabilities belonging to different kendras of Manipur in 2 phases during the function.
Mugesh Thulasikanthan, Lecturer in Occupational Therapy, NIEPID, Secunderabad and K Romesh Singh, District Social Welfare Officer, Imphal West also attended the programme among others.
