One day awareness and orientation programme on constitutional and statutory rights of ST held

A one day district level awareness and orientation programme on the Constitutional and the Statutory Rights of the Scheduled Tribes and the role of Manipur State Commission for the Scheduled Tribes organised by The Manipur State Commission for the Scheduled Tribes (MSCST) was held today at Longmai Part-3 Community Hall, Noney District Headquarter.
The prog was graced by RH Gonmei, IAS (retd), Chairperson, Manipur State Commission for the Scheduled Tribes; Dr Simpson Sareo, member MSCST; Dr John H Pulamte, member MSCTC; Kasaigai Gangmei, Chairman Longmai Village Authority; and Kaguichung Gonmei, Chairman Longmai Thoubei Customary Court as the presidium members.
Speaking at the event, the chairperson outlined the purpose and function of MSCST.
The legal expert of MSCST, Dr Thajamanbi Yumkham spoke on the socio-econmic safeguard, political safeguard, reservation & promotion policies for the Scheduled Tribes people, institutional and constitutional safeguards.
She also said that the MSCST plays a vital role in bridging gap between Law Enforcement (Govt) and the Tribal People.
It may be mentioned that National Commission for Scheduled Tribe (NCST) was set up in the year 2003 through the 89th Constitution Amendment Act, 2003 to monitor all constitutional as well as other statutory safeguards for the protection of STs and to participate and advise on the socio-economic development planning process of the STs while, at the state level, The Manipur State Commission for the Scheduled Tribes (MSCST), a statutory body, was constituted under the Manipur State Commission for the Scheduled Tribes Act, 2014 .
The MSCST started functioning in the year 2016 to safeguard the interests of the ST population in Manipur provided by the Indian Constitution for their accelerated socio-economic development.
The programme was attended by academics, social activists, intellectuals, Church leaders, village authority leaders, Journalists, students leaders and the officials of District Administration, Noney.
