The session of the Indira Gandhi Tribal University, which the state government has decided to set up at Keihao village on the northern side of Makhan village in Kangpokpi sub division, will start from September 15 this year by opening a unit, disclosed Education Minister L Jayentakumar today.
In an exclusive interview with Hueiyen Lanpao today, the Education Minister said that setting up the university specially for the tribal students is to be done under 100 days action programme of the UPA government by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development.
A high level team led by Vice Chancellor of the National Tribal University will come to Imphal on August 30 to inspect the site at Keihao village for the construction of the University.
The team will be accompanied by another team of architects for the construction of the infrastructure, Jayentakumar informed.
Earlier, the Vice Chancellor had visited the state with regard to establishing the university.
Minister Jayentakumar further said that the government is considering opening of the first phase unit of the University at the guest house of the District Council.
He along with the Tribal Development Minister DD Thaisii visited the site at Keihao today again.
Considering expansions in future, the Government has decided to acquire 500 acres of land instead of the earlier decision of acquiring 300 acres only for the University.
There is a provision of further expansion of the university in future.
The cost for the setting up of the university is yet to be estimated, he added.
For acquisition of 500 acres of land in the village, an agreement has been signed between the authority concerned and the village chief today in his office chamber, the Minister revealed.
On behalf of Makhan village, chief and secretary of the village signed the agreement while Commissioner (Higher Education), Additional Deputy Commissioner, Kangpokpi and SDC of Saitu Gamphajol sub-division were the signatory on behalf of the state government.
In the agreement, it was also mentioned that during the process of construction of the infrastructure for the University, the villagers can continue to work in their fields.
As per the agreement, the value of the land will be at the market rate fixed by the state revenue department.
Villagers or land owners will leave the land when the authority starts construction works as stated in
the agreement.
Mention may be made that the government has decided to set up the Tribal University at Keihao village located some 25 kilometer from Imphal.
