President of the Poirei Leimarol Apunba Meira Paibi Lup, Memchoubi has been put under detention by Imphal West police today.
A group of women coming in a Canter bus from Moirangkhom side this evening stormed the Imphal Police Station located opposite to the state police headquarter demanding immediate release of Memchoubi and other two women.
They asked the police to detain them as well if their leader is not released.
President of the Poirei Leimarol Apunba Meira Paibee Lup (PLAMPL), Sarangthem Memchoubi (74), wife of Tharogou was picked up by a team of Imphal Police Station comprising personnel of the Imphal West police commandos this morning from her house at Khoyathong Polem Leikai along with two other women who happened to be at her house at that time.
The two women picked up along with Memchoubi are Hamom Borkeina (40), wife of Loken of Wangoo Sandangkhong and Takhellambam Ibeyaima (41), wife of Rajen of the same locality.
When Memchoubi reportedly asked the police to give reasons why she should be arrested, police alleged her of taking part in the ongoing agitations against the Khwairamband market incident of July 23 and participating in the poster campaign and other agitations.
Police also seized posters displaying the photos of Tehelka news magazine revealing Sanjit being escorted by police commandos before killing him and photos showing a pot in which the unborn child from the womb of deceased Rabina, reports said.
Later, this evening around 4.45, a group of women stormed the Imphal district police demanding release of their leader or detain them too.
After a brief argument, two women namely, Landhoni and Heiyai were allowed to meet Memchoubi for a few minutes.
Police later released the other two women picked up along with Memchoubi but detained the latter further.
After coming out from there, the angry women protesters shouted slogans in front of the Chief Minister's bungalow demanding his resignation.
Police stopped them from shouting further and escorted them upto Keishampat.
Police source in the meantime said that she will be produced before the district magistrate with a prayer of further detention in the police custody.
On the other hand staging of sit-in protest and burning of effigies of chief minister, his wife MLA Landhoni, DGP and police commandos involved in the July 23 fake encounter continued today also at several places.
The protests were carried out at Thangmeiband Meisnam Leikai, Thangmeiband Sinam Leikai, Kwakeithel Nganapithong, Chinga Mathak, Oinam Thingel, Wangkhei Angom Leikai etc.
