Imphal, August 13 2011:
The ongoing general strike called by the Sadar Hills District Demand Committee (SHDDC) in demand of a full-fledged Sadar Hills district entered its 13th day today.
It may be mentioned that the state government had given a dateline of August 15 to call off the strike otherwise stern actions would be taken up by the government forces.
However, there were no signs of the intensity of the ongoing strike cooling down.
The strike was enforced from Kangpokpi to Gamgiphai today with full participation from the people of the area.
Locals of these areas with sticks in their hands were seen camping alongside highway 39 in recently erected tents.
The highway was dug up by strike supporters who piled up stones, trees and unused vehicles to block it.
A woman volunteer at Saparmeina area in an interview with Hueiyen Lanpao questioned the reason of the state government for stalling the creation of a full-fledged Sadar Hills district and its policy to suppress the striker supporters.
She further said that the formation of a full-fledged Sadar Hills district will not affect the territorial integrity of the state.
She questioned the reason of differentiating the formation of Sadar Hills district and formation of the nine districts of the state and why is the government trying to communalise the present issue.
She further condemned the decision of the state government to use security forces to disperse strike supporters.
