Imphal, August 13 2011:
The driver who was undergoing treatment after strike supporters bludgeoned him on his head with stones during the ongoing general strike called by SHDDC succumbed to his injuries at Shija Hospital today around 5.30 am.
Sharing the grief and sorrows of family members of Md Rehman, the ill fated driver, drivers of all commercial vehicles in the state will suspend their service from today midnight till 5 pm of August 14 .
Speaking in a press meet held at the office of the All Manipur Road Transport Drivers' & Workers' Union at MG Avenue, secretary, Kullamani told reporters that Md Rehman was attacked while ferrying essential commodities for the people of the state.
Strike supporters bashed his head with stones.
He was struggling for his life in the ICU of Shija Hospital before he succumbed to his injuries this morning.
The union demanded the state government to provide appropriate ex gratia payment to the driver's family at the earliest, and also demanded a suitable government job to a family member of the deceased driver.
More than ' 2 lakh was spent for the treatment of the driver which was covered by the Transporters & Drivers' Council, Drivers' Union and All Manipur Road Transport Drivers' & Workers' Union.
No co-operation or financial aid was received from the state government for his treatment, Kullamani said.
