Governor to scan border dispute area

Imphal, August 24 2013 : Taking serious note of the imminent loss of large tracts of Manipur's territory on account of border fencing along Indo-Myanmar border and the recent attempt by the Myanmar Army to open a base camp at Hollenphai inside Manipur's territory, Governor Ashini Kumar would be going to the international border for a field assessment.

Meanwhile, the committee constituted by the State Government is all set to visit the disputed sites for a spot verification on Monday.

A Cabinet meeting held this afternoon with Chief Mi-nister O Ibobi in the chair de- liberated at length on imminent loss of Manipur's territo- ry on account of the border fencing work as well as the attempt of Myanmar Army to set up one of their base camps at Hollenphai.

Speaking to media persons after the Cabinet meeting, Go-vernment spokesman and Education Minister M Oken-dro conveyed that the commit- tee headed by Principal Secretary (Home) Dr Suresh Babu as Chairman held a meeting today.

The meeting decided that members of the committee would go to Moreh on Monday and conduct a spot en- quiry of the border fencing work as well as the attempt of Myanmar Army to set up a base camp at Hollenphai.

The State Government would take a definite decision after receiving report of the committee's spot enquiry and the same would be forwarded to the Government of India.

On being asked if the Go-vernor would visit the disputed sites, Okendro informed that Governor Ashini Kumar would go to Moreh on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, a joint meeting of 9th Assam Rifles and Myanmar Army was held to-day at Moreh and discussed about the Myanmar Army's recent attempt to set up a base camp at Hollenphai.

However, details of what transpired at the meeting could not be obtained till the time of filing this report.

SDPO Moreh and Immigration Officer H Balaram has already sent a written intimation to the Tamu DC to hold a meeting of the border liaison offices of the two coun- tries at the earliest.

Although the Myanmar Army claimed that Assam Ri-fles was informed about their plan to set up a base camp at Hollenphai which was categorically denied by Assam Rifles, Manipur Police submitted a report to the State Government a few days back, informed a source.

On the other hand, the Cabinet meeting held today resolved to select State nominees for pursuing MBBS/BDS courses based on the NEET results, conveyed Okendro.

The Government adopted this resolution after what other States were doing on the matter of holding State PMTs or not.

The State has been allotted 20 MBBS seats and two BDS seats from the central pool.

The State has 30 MBBS seats in RIMS and 85 in JNIMS.

The State Cabinet further decided to acquire 104 acres of khasland and private lands for setting up a pony sanctuary.

Land acquisition for expansion/development of Imphal-Moreh road with monetary assistance from ADB was another agenda of the Cabinet meeting, informed Okendro.
