Chief Minister Okram Ibobi made a direct inspection of the infrastructure development works for a medical college at JN Hospital this afternoon.

The Chief Minister expressed satisfaction over the pace of infrastructure development work.

However, Ibobi was peeved on observing work initiated by TP cell without necessary design for the ward block to the southern side of JN Hospital's Emergency Ward.
The Chief Minister reprimanded the TP cell officials with strong words.
He explained that the block should be constructed after obtaining suitable design from a competent authority.
Simply initiating construction work and digging up earth without necessary design would do more harm than good, Ibobi asserted.
Later speaking to media persons, Ibobi said that the medical institute is targeted to commence its maiden session from July this year.
However, notwithstanding the fact that the State Government has been spending huge amounts to upgrade JN Hospital to the status of a medical college, the Medical Council of India (MCI) has not given its approval yet.
Nevertheless, Dr AD who has been appointed Director of the State Medical College said efforts were being made to persuade the MCI to allow enrolment of 100 students in the medical college every year.
As prerequisite fundamentals, departments of Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry would be opened before commencement of the first semester, Dr AD said.
Informing that required Professors for Physiology and Biochemistry have been appointed, he said that the required number of Professors for Anatomy department are yet to be appointed.
Around 80 percent of the required staff have also been appointed.
As per the rules of MCI, admission for first semester should be completed before August 15 this year though it may be extended till September with due permission from MCI.
The college may be opened in July this year in case the MCI gives its approval, Dr AD said.
A medical college should have 17 departments in all.
Yet, only three will be opened in the first phase followed by more departments in phased manner.
According to MCI rules, for a medical college 100 students, there should be 300 beds.
For the final semester of MBBS course, there should be 500 beds.
At present, JN Hospital has 300 beds and this would be increased to the requisite number soon, Dr AD said.
