Imphal, September 25 2009:
Inspite of the awareness of over 100 posts of Manipur Police Service (MPS) still lying vacant, Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh-led SPF Government has set its eye on creation of new posts in MPS which would cost the State exchequer over Rs 20 lakhs in a year.
This questionable move of the SPF Government came to the fore when The Sangai Express conducted an independent investigation in connection with the State Cabinet decision of creating 11 new MPS posts with the stated objective of strengthening the Police Department and its hand in dealing with the law and order problem in the State.
Under the Manipur Police Service Rules, 1965 (First Amendment, 2008), there are in all 258 specific MPS posts in the State Police Department.
This include one MPS Super Time, 10 MPS Selection Grade, 42 MPS Junior Administrative Grade (I), 143 MPS Grade (II) and 60 others on Deputation, Leave or Training Reserve.
All these MPS posts are at the supervisory level and the total number of filled up posts at present is 125, thus leaving a vacancy of 133 posts.
So instead of filing up these vacant posts, creation of 11 more new posts would cost the State exchequer of additional amount of over Rs 20 lakhs annually.
Creation of new posts is also likely to affect the cadre strength of MPS.
It may be noted here that the meeting of the State Cabinet held yesterday decided to create six new posts of Additional SPs and five SDPOs.
