Imphal, September 25 2009:
A team of central Vigilance Committee arrived at Imphal today on a three day visit to the state during which the panel members would oversee the Public Distribution System mechanism.
The team headed by Chairman Justice DP Wadhwa includes legal team head Dayan Krishnan, Meenakshi Chauhan, Maomi Chandra, Shohit Chaudhary and TV Sireys.
After landing at Imphal, the team held a meeting with State Government officials on the implementation of Public Distribution System in the state at the conference hall of the Secretariat.

The meeting was attended by Principal Secretaries, Civil Supply officials and Deputy Commissioners excepting the DC of Churachandpur district.
After the meeting, the Vigilance team conducted a public hearing at State Guest House, Sanjenthong.
The public hearing was participated by representatives of women's Self Help Groups, transporters and civil society organisations.
They presented complaints about non-receipt of PDS items to the allotted share.
They also submitted complaint letters to the visiting Vigilance team.
Even though the people from far off places attended the public hearing, Government selected Fair Price Shop dealers were absent.
Many people complained that politicisation, exercising nepotism and favouritism while selecting FPS dealers by MLAs and Ministers have deprived the poor people of their due share of PDS items.
Non-state actors too interfere in the implementation of PDS, they said.
A number of people coming from Malom Awang Leikai, Khongjom Sapam Leikai, Wangoi Assembly constituency, Andro Assembly constituency, Saikul, Langdum and other localities highlighted their grievances about APL, BPL and AAY rice, sugar and kerosene oil.
Even as the BPL and APL cards guaranteed 35 kgs of rice every month, not more than 10 kgs are provided to the people.
They pointed out that they have not been getting neither BPL nor APL sugar since a long time back.
The people were unaware of the exact price of rice distributed under PDS.
It would cost Rs 6 per kg in one month and Rs 7 in another month, they complained.
Although the price of BPL rice was fixed at Rs 3.50 per kg, it was distributed to the card holders at Rs 9 per kg, the complainants alleged.
They decried that the relevant Department(s) were inactive.
Many other people decried that they could not get any benefit from BPL or APL cards.
With complaints always falling on deaf ears, people were reluctant to lodge any complaint, they said and expressed desire to make the FCS Department pro-active regarding implementation of PDS.
