Imphal, December 21 2021:
The Indigenous Peoples' Alliance (IPA) has submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister N Biren Singh to enact a State population policy, establish a State Population Commission and update the National Register of Citizens (NRC) Act to protect the identity of indigenous people of Manipur.
In the memorandum, the IDA also appealed to all political parties to adopt and include "Enforcement/Implementation of NRC Act" in their respective manifestos.
The IDA said that sharp demographic imbalance caused by illegal immigrants coupled with geographical limitation of Manipur can lead to complete destruction of social and political well being of the State.
"We could all be traveling on an already sinking ship," it said and added that such reasons and apprehensions made the then Parliamentarians to mandate the 2003 Amendment of the Citizenship Act of 1955 for re-enactment of National Register of Citizens (NRC) to document all legal and bonafide citizens of the Nation.
The IDA then urged the Chief Minister to realize the gravity of the issue and enact a State population policy, establish a State Population Commission and update the National Register of Citizens (NRC) Act at the earliest.
According to IDA, N Biren Singh had announced in the Legislative Assembly that the updates of NRC-1951 would be exercised/implemented before the 2022 elections.
