Imphal, October 03 2011:
While recalling the original boundaries of Kangla which extended upto Pureiromba Khongnangkhong, president of the Kangla Historical Monument Protection Committee, Angom Lalmani today demanded that the state government should conserve the original boundaries of Kangla and take up actions to safeguard the sanctity of Kangla.
Speaking at a press release held at the Manipur Press Club, Imphal on Sunday, Lalmani said that a fact finding committee of the state government consisting of Y Irabot, Ph Parijat, Chandramni, Md Mehabuddin and ID Dajung with MLA M Ibohanbi as Chairman recommended demolition of structures erected by acquiring areas of Kangla under the Historical Monument Act 1976 in 1982.However, the recommendation of the fact finding committee has not been translated by the state government since then.
He said that the swimming area being provided on the western side of the south gate of Kangla is not well placed and the statue of Jawaharlal Nehru facing backward to the western gate of Kangla amounts to insulting and dishonouring the religious site.
Moreover washing and bathing activities being carried out in parts of the Kangla Pat and Kekrupat also shows the inability of the state government to protect the identity of Kangla and conserve its historical and religious values.
While observing that blockage of drainage and sacred sites inside the Kangla has led the Manipuri society to such social turmoil and unrest, Lalmani appealed to the state government to take up actions to conserve the Kangla and clean the sacred places inside the Kangla.
