CS lays foundation stone for cargo terminal

Apart from inaugurating a RADAR surveillance system which can cover the whole North-Eastern region, Chief Secretary Dr J Suresh Babu laid the foundation stone of an Integrated Cargo Terminal at Imphal International Airport, Changangei, today.
The new RADAR system installed at the airport is part of the overall Nationwide Air Navigation Services (ANS) Project taken up to enhance surveillance coverage for sustaining massive projected air traffic growth in the coming years over the Indian skies, including North Eastern States.
The RADAR system is equipped with one of the world's latest technology.
As per International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Standards, it is of LEVEL 5 capability which gives comprehensive and accurate information about aircraft and it can also work as digital data-link between ATC systems and aircraft.
The introduction of digital data-link facility further enhances the capability of RADAR systems many times.
According to information gathered from Airports Authority of India (AAI), Imphal, a similar surveillance system was installed in Guwahati in December 2017 and installation of RADAR system in Imphal and Automatic Dependence Surveillance Broadcast (ADSB) systems at Dibrugarh, Agartala and Guwahati will improve surveillance coverage over all the North Eastern States apart from ensuring safety of flights operating in the North-Eastern region.
The authority also conveyed that the Integrated Cargo Terminal at the Imphal International Airport will be constructed at the cost of Rs 15.93 crore and will have total built up area of 2054 sq.m (double storey) and 3200 sq.m parking area.
The project is funded by Ministry* of Commerce, GoI & AAI.
The work is being executed through MANIDCO and it should be completed within a period of 15 months.
This will facilitate handling of domestic and international air cargo at Imphal International Airport.
It is also said that the Integrated Cargo Terminal will foster economic development of the State, generate employment opportunities and export promotion for garments, handicraft, pharma products and perishable cargo etc among others once it (Integrated Cargo Terminal) is commissioned.
