Imphal, July 10 2019: State Agriculture Management & Extension Training Institute (SAMETI), Department of Agriculture organised a state level training course on "Climate Resilient Agriculture for Ensuing Food Security" at Farmers training Hall in Directorate of Agriculture, Sanjenthong today.

The training course was organised for extension functionaries of ATMA and extension staff of Department of Agriculture in which over 60 individuals participated.

Director of Agriculture, Manipur A Subhash, Joint Director L Irabot and Executive Engineer (Agri) Th Dilip attended the programme as the chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.

Speaking on the occasion, Agriculture Director A Subhash conveyed that agriculture is based on climate but unfortunately, there has been a drastic climate change with rapid rise in temperature.

He noted that the weather condition in Manipur, some years back, was in such a state that no fan and air conditioner were needed to survive.

But now, with a view to tackle this climate change and exploring resilient methods to maintain or prevent from decreasing the State's food production and food security, the training was conducted by calling many subject experts and deliberate on the matter at hand.

The Agriculture Department believes that the trainees will be able to spread the awareness and employ the techniques and methods, taught during the training programme, in their particular field which in turn help sustain the food security and production of the State, he maintained.

Choosing the right crop, process of mitigation, finding varieties of crops which can be planted with minimal water, combating drought etc are some of the techniques and ways which will be disseminated during the training programme.

Although Manipur has not been officially announced as a drought State, necessary preparations have been made for transplantation of paddy seeds at over 301 hectares at four locations.

A Subhash further stated that the staff of the department will start distributing paddy seeds at different areas of the State starting from today.
