Imphal, February 26 2018:
Even as a series of protest agitation has been lined up demanding location of Kakching district headquarters at the most appropriate site, the proposed agitation has been suspended following Chief Minister N Biren's assurance thatthe Government would decide the matter in the interest of public.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club here today, District Headquarters Demand Committee convenor Mayanglambam Sureshkumar rued that the State Government iis yet to decide the location of Kakching district headquarters even though Kakching.was one among the seven new districts created by the previous Government on December 8, 2016 .
There are four Assembly segments within Kakching district and the committee has been appealing to the Government to choose the most appropriate site for development of district headquarters in public interest.
In the meantime, some people even calledabandh insisting that Kakching town should be developed as the district headquarters.
As the bandh turned out to be quite effective and large number of people felt that Kakching would be developed as the district headquarters.
It was this growing apprehension which drove the people of Wabagai, Hiyanglam and Sugnu to stage a protest demonstration at Wabagai yesterday.
But police unleashed brute force upon the protesters by firing several rounds of tear gas shells and mock bombs and inflicted injuries to around 20 people.
Moreover, police pulled up four people, Sureshkumar said.
Taking strong exception to such brutal crackdown, the committee was preparing for a series of intense agitation but the Chief Minister invited the committee for a talk this morning.
During the meeting with some representatives of the committee, Chief Minister N Biren reportedly stated that the incumbent Government is for the people and it would do all for the welfare of the people.
Citing the ongoing Class X and Class XII examinations and the Yaoshang festival, the Chief Minister urged the committee to wait for sometime.
Keeping faith in the Chief Minister, the proposed agitation has been suspended for sometime, Sureshkumar said.
