The Manipur State Pensioners' Union organised the 8th Pensioners Day at Lamyanba Shanglen today.
Manipur State Pensioners' Union president Huidrom Yaima said that the union was established with an objective to solve the problems faced by pensioners on May 22, 2002 .
He added that pensioners hailing from different parts of the State took out a silent rally upto Raj Bhavan gate highlighting their demands on July 21, 2005 .
They demanded the Government not to upset the pensioners and not to clear pension amount in three instalments.
Consequently, the State Government started taking up measures to fully provide entitled benefits to pensioners in time, he added.
Saying that the union started celebrating State Pensioners Day from October 21, 2006, Yaima said that the union has been donating ration items to children homes on this day every year.
This year, the union would provide aid to a children home in Ukhrul.
Saying that Ukhrul district alone has around 600 pensioners, Yaima said that the number is increasing in other hill districts as well.
Treasury Officer K Bingku while speaking at the function said that with the introduction of Regional Clearing Service, pension amount is now transferred to respective bank accounts of the pensioners on the first day of every month for Imphal Treasury circle.
He said that the service would be introduced in other districts as well.
United Bank of India AGM (Regional) Nilamani Jena and AMTUC & AMGEO general secretary L Phurjit also attended the function.
