Friends of Tribal Society celebrates silver jubilee

A peace rally was taken out to mark the silver jubilee celebration of Friends of Tribal Society (Akal abhiyan) here today.
The rally flagged off by former Assistant Commissioner (Imphal East) G Budhachandra Sharma from THAU Ground, thangmeiband at 10 am culminated the starting point after covering Khoyathong, North AOC
and Chingmeirong.
The celebration rally organised by Akal Abhiyan, Imphal Anchal was participated by the Society's functionaries and members as well as students of Ekal Vidyalay, a non-formal educational institution run by the Society.
The formal celebration function held at THAU Ground was attended by the Society's national vice president Arunkumar Bajaj, G Budhachandra Sharma and VHP national joint secretary Swapan Kumar Mukherjee as the chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
According to the Manipur project coordinator Chingtham Kunjabihari, the Society was launched in the State in 2004 and till date district level units have been established in Imphal West, Senapati, Thoubal and Bishnupur.
Under these centres non formal schools having class I to III standards have been opened in the villages wherein the local children in addition to academic chores, take lessons in yoga, spirit of nationalism and vocational training free of cost, said the coordinator.
Speaking at the occasion, Society's North East India project in-charge Karna Gorh highlighting that aim of the organisation in the NE region is to ensure children in remote areas are not deprived of their basic educational rights as well as promote their physical and mental well-being.
Out of about 35,000 non formal schools of the Society across the nation and 3750 in the NE Region there are 450 schools in Manipur, he said adding that the Society was set up in 1989 in Jharkhand by (late) Bhao Raoji Diwras.
