Seminar on environmental protection begins

A two-day national seminar on Environmental Protection Drives: Politics and Unseen Challenges was opened today at the Library Hall of Department of Maharaja Bodhchandra College, here.
The seminar is being organised by Department of Political Science, Maharaja Bodhchandra College under the sponsorship of Indian Council of Social Science Research, New Delhi.
Dr Maimom Homeshore Singh, Director, Directorate of Environment, Government of Manipur and K Monoranjan Singh, Vice Principal attended the inaugural function as the chief guest and guest of honour, respectively.
Dr Th Manihar Singh, Principal, MB College presided the inaugural function.
Dr RK Indira Devi, Associate Professor of English, MB College delivered the keynote address.
The vote of thanks was proposed by Dr Homen Thangjam, Seminar Convenor.
Two academic sessions followed the inaugural function.
The session titled, "Environment, Globalization & People's Movement", was chaired by Dr H Narendra Singh, Scientist, RS-GIS Group, Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune.
Four resource persons presented their papers.
Kakchingtabam Naresh Sharma, Research Scholar, JNU, New Delhi presented a paper, "Saving or Managing the Paradise: High Modernist Environment Politics and Implication for Democratic Citizenship".
Dr Chinglen Maisnam, Manipur Universty, presented a paper titled, "Globalisation, Resource Conflict and Environmental Crisis: The Case of North Eastern Region".
Dr D Roy Laifungbam, president, Elders' Council, Centre for Organisation Research and Education, Manipur spoke on "Tragedy of the Diminishing Commons in Manipur".
The post lunch session thematically titled, "Forest, Community and Livelihood", was chaired by Dr D Roy Laifungbam.
L Lhingneilam, Assistant Professor of Geography, MB College, Imphal, presented a paper titled, "Deforestation in the Upper Tuvai Water Shed: Changing Pattern and Its Implications".
Jiten Yumnam, Director, Centre for Advocacy and Research, Manipur, spoke on "Forest Rights and Injustices".
Grace Jajo, a rights activist based in Manipur, spoke on "Reserved Forest Vs Community Forest".
The last speaker was Jinine Laisramcha, Convenor, NEHRC, Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh, and he presented a paper titled, "Critical Analysis of Forest Rights Act 2006".
