1150 litres of local liquor set ablaze

Imphal, March 28, 2014:
A total of 1150 litres of local liquor, seized from different places since March 24, were set on fire today at the premises of State Excise Department head office, Lamphel under the supervision of K Joykumar Singh, Assistant Commissioner, Nodal Officer of Excise, Manipur.
Speaking to reporters, K Joykumar said that the drive against selling of liquor was launched by the department since the day the Election Code of Conduct came into force in the State.
He said that a total of 3,956 litres of liquor were seized from different places since March 6. The seized liquor has been valued at Rs 3,95,600. Besides, 123 bottles of Imported Foreign Liquor worth about Rs 62,000 were seized during the period, Joykumar said.
As part of the drive, the Excise personnel had conducted raids at 218 places while 155 persons have been penalised under Manipur Liquor Prohibition Act, 1991.A total of Rs 1,82,600 has been collected as fine, he added.
Joykumar further said that 650 litres of liquor were recovered from a Maruti Gypsy bearing registration No MN1A-5953) this morning near Raj Polyclinic, North AOC.
An occupant of the vehicle has been confined in a lock-up.
He said that the drive has been launched by the Excise department in compliance with Election Commission of India (ECI)'s guidelines ahead of the LS poll while adding that the drive would be continued even after the polls are over.
