Siege of Imphal commemorated

Imphal, March 28, 2014:
"Siege of Imphal" by the Imperial Japanese Army on March 28, 1944 during the World War-II was commemorated today at Kangpokpi.
The function was jointly organised by Manipur Tourism Forum and 2nd World War Imphal Campaign Foundation as a part of the commemoration of 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Imphal (WWII).
Most of the speakers in the function stressed about the significance of organising the function.
Kangpokpi is the location where the Imperial Japanese Army's 15th division cut the vital Imphal-Kohima road on March 28, 1944 during the WW-II.
This action was carried out by two companies of 3rd battalion, 67th regiment, also known as the Honda Raiding Unit under Captain Honda.
The cutting of the road led to the encircling of the allied forces in and sound Imphal plain by Japanese Army.
The siege of imphal by Japanese forces lasted nearly three months.
A photo exhibition on WW-II and cultural programme by different colourful communities were also held during the function.
The function was graced by Haojakham Chongloi, Chairman Kanggui Elders' forum as chief guest, Seimang Khongsai, President Kuki Inpi, Sadar Hills as guest of honour and Arambam Angamba, co-convenor, organising committee as president of the function.
