Special awareness programme for 3rd gender conducted

Thoubal, October 28 2018:
District Election office Thoubal, under the aegis of Systematic Voters Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP), organized Special Awareness Campaign for the 3rd gender (transgender) to take them under the fold of electoral roll 2019 in the run up of the 15th Lok Sabha election to be held in 2019 at District Election Counting Hall yesterday.
The campaign was attended by District Election Officer Haobam Roshita Devi, ADM Thoubal L Radhakanta, AC to DC Teressa Tangpua and Election Officer Lien Shingshit as resource persons.
DEO Haobam Roshita IAS said that the gender other than the male or female gender is termed and has been accorded recognition as 3rd gender (transgender) .
To mitigate the difficulties face by them while exercising their voting rights, the Govt of India is taking many major initiatives, she added and said that they have a huge role to play in electing the responsible and accountable representatives.
3rd genders or transgenders face societal stigmatization and orchestration, said the 3rd gender participants and expressed hope that the initiative taken up by the Govt of India will lessen their ordeal.
The campaign saw participation from many transgenders from Thoubal and Kakching.
