Imphal, March 19 2018:
Parents and siblings of Pravish Chanam, along with the convener of North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS), met Union Minister for Home Affairs, Rajnath Singh today seeking a CBI inquiry into the death of Pravish Chanam.
A press release issued by the convenor of NEFIS stated that during the meeting Rajnath Singh assured the deceased's family that his office will positively intervene in the matter.
The meeting was held after hundreds of students and individuals and organizations participated in a Candle Light March titled 'North-East People's Lives Matter' organized by NEFIS yesterday.
It narrated that on September 8 last year Pravish Chanam went to Knowledge Park in Noida from Safdarjung, New Delhi (where he was staying) to attend a music concert with his friends.
He went missing after the concert and was later found dead.
Noida Police had been carrying out an investigation into the circumstances which led to his death but the shoddy inquiry conducted by the police as well as the subsequent details of the case strongly pointed towards the dubious role of police personnel themselves in the case, it alleged.
Consequently, the victim's family demanded an inquiry by CBI into the case and since the matter fell under the authority of the UP Government, the deceased's family had requested the State Government to ask UP Chief Minister to transfer the case to CBI.
It stated that despite UP Government assuring the State Government that the case would be transferred to the CBI, no further steps have been taken in this regard amounting to a blatant attempt to shield the culprits by al lowing them ample time to destroy evidence which may implicate them in the future.
Moreover, Pravish's incident is not an isolated case of racism against North-East people and NEFIS believes that it is high time the people stand against racism against the people from North-East, it added.
It also pledged to intensify its struggle, if justice is not speedily ensured to the deceased.
