Khemchand calls for inclusive development of differently abled people

Speaker, Manipur Legislative Assembly, Y Khemchand Singh today distributed Teaching Learning Materials (TLM) kits to the Persons with Intellectual Disabilities at GM Hall.
The distribution programme was organised by Relief Centre for the Welfare of Differently Abled Persons, Manipur in association with Office of the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Government of Manipur.
Speaking as chief guest, Khemchand said that various welfare schemes by the Govemment have facilitated many disabled persons throughNGOs in the State.
However, there are still many differently abled people who are unable to access the welfare Schemes due to lack of awareness.
He appealed to the concerned Department to look into the matter for inclusive development of the differently abled people.
Dr RK Kumarjit Singh, State Commissioner for Disabilities informed that National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (Divyangjan), MEPID began working in the State in 2014 as an awareness programme and has now started identification, assessment and verification of intellectuals disabilities.
According to 2011 census, there are around 57,000 differently able persons in our State and are identified under the Persons With Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act, 1995.Under the Right of Persons With Disability (RPWD) Act, 2016, the number of Specified Disability has increased from 7 to 21 and the number of persons with disabilities in the State will increase if identified under RPWD Act, 2016, he said.
