73,278 adults covered under NLM in five years

Department of Adult Education and State Literacy Mission Authority claimed to have imparted education to over 73,278 adults over five-year period under the National Literacy Mission (NLM) of the Government of India.
Under the literacy mission, adult education centres were set up at four hill districts of the State with an aim to educate maximum number of adults in the area.
The education centres were set up in Chandel (59 centres), Senapati (142 centres), Tamenglong (56 centres) and Thoubal (64 centres).
In Chandel district, 12,941 adults participants out of the total 14,648 were honoured with certificate of merit by the end of programme.
Department of Adult Education and State Literacy Mission aims to educate another 1,707 by the end of 2015.In Senapati district, out of the targeted 40,107 participants, only 16,617 made it till the end of the programme.
The Department aims to educate 23,490 by the year end.
Approximately 10,788 from the targeted 11,579 adults of Tamenglong district were conferred with certificates of merit under the National Literacy programme.
An added 651 adults is likely to be educated by the end of the year.
Thoubal district recorded the highest literacy coverage with 32,788 qualifying from the targeted 34,633 adults.
The Department further assured an addition of 1,511 adults under the literacy span of the district in 2015.The 2001 census of India recorded female literacy rate at 53.67%.The Government of India, with an aim to uproot gender and regional disparities in literacy introduced a new scheme - Saakshar Bharat (Literacy India) to encourage literacy among adults.
Saakshar Bharat, is a variant of the earlier NLM.
It aims to raise literacy rate to 80%, reduce gender gap and minimize regional and social disparities, with focus on women, SCs, STs, minorities and other disadvantaged groups.
All those districts that had female literacy rate below 50% as per census 2001 are covered under the programme.
Tamenglong, Ukhrul, Senapati and Thoubal district were among the 372 districts picked out for implementation of the scheme by the Government of India.
In January 15, 2010, State Education Minister launched Saakshar Bharat at Thoubal district.
The scheme was launched nationwide on September 8, 2009 by the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
