Three arrested for using batteries to catch fish

Bishnupur, August 03 2019:
Three persons along with tools like batteries, Iron net were arrested for indulging in illegal activities to catch fish using battery to electrocute the aqua life in Loktak lake in the intervening night of August 2 and 3 .
According to Bishnupur police, on receiving an specific information that some persons are indulging in illegal activities to catch fish from Lamyai Pat in Loktak lake near Thinungei Mamang, a police team led by Addl SP (L/O), Bishnupur Police searched the area and apprehended three persons.

They have been identified as Irom Ingoba Singh (42) from Ward No 8, Thinungei Mayai Leikai, Laishram Gandhi Singh (28) from Thinungei Mayai Mamang Leikai and Laishram Tomba Singh (52) from Ward No 6, Thinungei Mayai Leikai.
The police also seized three 12V batteries, two Fishing Spear Fork (Long), Iron Net to connect wire with three DC to AC converter etc, from their possesion.
An FIR has been registered against the three persons for further investigation.
Parading the three individuals in front of the media persons at SP Bishnupur Office, SP Hopson Sapam said that Bishnupur Police are in look out for individuals who are engaging in illegal activities to catch fish from Loktak lake for sometime.
Acting on a tip yesterday, the police team conducted search at Thinungei Mamang and managed to arrest the three individuals along the fish catching gears, he added.
Appreciating the support of the public that lead to the capture of the three culprits, the SP appeal all to stop such illegal activities in Loktak lake as it can damage the ecological balance of the area.
The SP also urged the fish farmers to remove the LED bulb used to catch fish in the Loktak lake at the earliest as using LED bulb not only reduced the production of egg but also scared away the migratory birds.
He also said that continual used of LED bulb will cause ecological imbalance in Loktak lake.
He also cautioned that the Bishnupur police will conduct drive to seize LED bulbs from next week onwards and sought cooperation from various club, organisation and CSOs based in the nearby area of Loktak lake.
