Killing of auto driver::Police cracks case, killers nabbed

Along with cracking the case, two persons who were alleged involved in the killing of autorickshaw driver Ayekpam Naveen (55) of Tera Loukrakpam on August 27 last, have been arrested by the police.
The arrested duo has been remanded to police custody for 10 days after they were produced before the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Thoubal today.
Naveen was found dead with his throat slit at Tangjeng Hangen Konjin Irakwa in Thoubal district.
The two arrested accused have been identified as Laishram Nanao alias Kiran (23), s/o L Ibosana and Yumnam Lokeshwar (23), s/o Y Manao, both residents of Kiyam Siphai Khundongbam Leikai in Thoubal district.
Yumnam Ongbi Yaimabi Devi (63), mother of Lokeshwar, has also been arrested by the police as she allegedly hid the mobile phone of Naveen after it was brought by son.
Talking to media persons in this regard, Lalboi, SDPO of Thoubal District Police informed that Lokeshwar and his mother were arrested at around 3 pm yesterday after the EMEI of the mobile handset (Nokia) used by Naveen but taken away by Lokeshwar, was tracked down.
The mobile has also been recovered by the police.
On further interrogation, involvement of Laishram Nanao in the killing was established and consequently, he too was arrested.
Detailing how and why the innocent autorickshaw driver was killed, the SDPO stated that on October 27 last, Lokeshwar and Nanao went to Phayeng to meet the girlfriend of Nanao.
When they returned from Phayeng and reached GM hall area, Imphal, it was around 7:30 pm.
Since there was no other means to go home, they hired the auto rickshaw of Naveen which was the only vehicle found parked at that time.
Naveen demanded Rs 350 as the fare from Imphal to Kiyam Siphai Khundongbam Leikai.
After the fare has been settled, they drove towards their destination.
On reaching the destination, Lokeshwar and Nanao gave only Rs 100 to Naveen and said they had no more money to pay.
The driver refused to take the money and asked them to pay the amount which was agreed upon.
Soon after, a heated argument broke out between the driver and the two passengers.
In the process, Nanao took out a knife and slit the throat of Naveen and left the place along with the mobile of the victim, the SDPO said.
The SDPO further informed that although Lokeshwar changed SIM card, he continued to use the handset of Naveen.
During the time Lokeshwar was using the mobile phone, police were able to track it.
But the tracking could not be made as it was hidden away by Yumnam ongbi Yaimabi Devi.
When the mobile handset was used again by the accused, the police were able to arrest Lokeshwar and his mother yesterday.
The accused duo and the mother were produced before the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Thoubal today.
Nanao and Lokeshwar, who were directly involved in the killing, have been remanded to police custody for 10 days while Yumnam ongbi Yaimabi Devi for four days.
Meanwhile, a meeting was convened at Kiyam Siphai today afternoon and resolved to banish Nanao and Lokeshwar from the locality.
Later, an irate mob also destroyed the houses of the two accused.
