Imphal, July 08, 2012:
An accidental fire that broke out at Yumnam Leikai ravaged a private residence and destroyed goods worth Rs 10 lakhs.
The fire was ignited when an LPG cylinder burst inside the kitchen of one Ngangom Biren at about 10 this morning.
As the family members of Biren were changing a new LPG re-fill after the first refill exhausted, two non-local men came in their neighbourhood offering their service to repair broken down LPG stoves, pressure cookers etc.
At this, the family members asked the non-local men to replace their LPG cylinder regulator with a new one.
The repairmen promptly replaced the replaced the regulator with a new one and they ignited the LPG stove to check the regulator.
However, as soon as the stove was ignited, the cylinder burst with a thundering sound.
The fire spread to the adjacent house of Biren's younger brother Dhiren and the house was completely devastated within no time.
Biren and his two brothers were living together in a double-storey wooden house but the kitchen was built separately.
Nevertheless, Manipur Fire Service personnel succeeded in containing the inferno before it could engulf other neighbouring houses by using three large fire tenders, one mini fire tender and one four-wheeler vehicle equipped with water pump-set.
It is reported that the two non-local repairmen escaped unhurt and they have been pulled up by police.
