Public dialogue on doctor-public relations

Manipur Medical Council (MMC) organised a public dialogue on doctor-patient/public relationship today at Manipur Press Club.
The session was moderated by former Joint Director of AIR, Imphal, BB Sharma.
A doctor-public interaction also marked the programme.
MMC Chairman, Dr Sinam Rajen, cardiothoracic surgeon of RIMS, Dr Ksh Kala, former Director of Medical Directorate, Dr Ibomcha, Prof Manglem of gynaecology dept, JNIMS, Prof Y Mohen of Pathology dept, JNIMS, Prosecution Director, Ngangom Tejkumar attended the interaction session.
Addressing the inaugural session of the programme, Dr Sinam Rajen pointed out that the doctors and patient party have strained relations of late.
He said that just as a doctor cannot cure a disease, death of a patient is not in his hands.
As such, people should shed the attitude and mindset that doctors could cure diseases/patients.

All doctors are trained at institutions set up with public fund, he said while urging all concerned to refrain from act of vandalism on public properties in the event of death of a patient.
Dr Ibomcha said that there are provisions under IPC to initiate action against any doctors accused of gross negligence in treating their patients.
Registrar of MMC, Dr K Lokendro said if any individual has any grievances against any doctor, he/she can approach the Council with authenticated information within fifteen days.
MMC has the prerogative to take action against doctors accused of culpable negligence and unethical practices, he said while adding it has also appointed advocates to assist the council in legal matter.
Prosecution Director, Ng Tejkumar said that MMC is also a kind of tribunal.
He added that the services of doctors are also under the purview of the Consumer Protection Forum.
As such, any grievances against any doctor can be appealed/complained to MMC or Consumer Protection Forum, Tejkumar said.
Tejkumar further said that fitting legal action can be taken up against the perpetrators of mob justice.
