PFA rescues birds

Imphal, December 30 2013:
People for Animals (PFA) rescued two birds from different places.
According to a statement, the PFA rescued a Blue throated Barbet (Megalaima asiatica) from Kakching.
The bird, included in schedule IV of WLPA was bought by one Mayanglambam Basanta of Kaching at Rs 20 from some young boys when he went to Tekcham Khunou on Saturday.
He then informed PFA to collect it.
The bird is found throughout southeast Asia but it is rarely seen nowadays in Manipur.
The name barbet comes from the beautiful red fringes (nupigi samgi sai gumba) that cover the base of its beak.
One Indian pond Heron was also rescued from Wangjing SK Leikai.
The bird was found flightless at a bank of a pond.
It was handed over to the PFA by one Moiranthem Surma, a young renowned female singer of the State from Wangjing.
Including these two, PFA had attended 27 birds (migratory and local), 20 reptiles consisting of turtles, snakes and lizards and 17 mammals including Loris and deer etc during this year.
It has collected 9 big bird nets.
Actively involved in apprehending 26 accused.
Two major achievements were accreditation of PFA Thoubal's Transit shelter to the Central Zoo Authority of India (CZA) and getting membership of ERN (Emergency Rescue Network).
ERN is a network of wildlife activists of India form under Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) who is a partner of International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) .
