State police and security force have apprehended at least 12 activists of two underground outfits, PREPAK and KYKL during counter insurgency operations at various places.
Eleven activists (nine PREPAK activists including two women overground members and two KYKL) were apprehended by the Imphal West district police commandos in the follow up investigation into the attack at the residence of former Chief Minister, Radhabinod Koijam on January 6 last while one KYKL cadre was nabbed by a combined force of Thoubal police commandos and troops of Assam Rifles.
While producing the 11 activists nabbed by the Imphal west police commandos before the media today, SDPO, Imphal west, I Ibomcha claimed to have foiled attempts to recruit children by them in Imphal West areas.
They were apprehended during the counter insurgency operations launched since January 7 till January 20 as followed up action to the attack at the house of Radhabinod Koijam, according to SDPO I Ibomcha.
In the police efforts to nab the undergrounds involved in hurling and exploding hand grenade at the residence of Radhabinod Koijam, former chief minster of Manipur, they including four women cadres have been apprehended and the search operation is still underway, the police officer added.
The arrested women were used by the undergrounds as messengers in delivering extortion letters.
Among the nine PREPAK cadres apprehended four were women while the rest two belonged to KYKL.
He also claimed that during the search operation, police commandos intercepted two minors being taken away from homes.
As revealed by minors, they had been brought out from their homes on the pretext of providing jobs in a brick field.
The children have been sent to their respective homes after counseling, the officer added.
Asserting that they were nabbed on different dates between January 7 to 20, the SDPO identified the Prepak activists as Moirangthem Monao alias Parimacha alias Mohen alias Sana (26) of Tera Sayang Lambi, Laikhuram Munal alias Sanathoi (24) of Langjing Achouba Maning Leikai, Elangbam ongbi Bilashini of Kachikhul village presently residing at Sagolbang Bijoygobinda, Ngangbam Sagar (28) son of Imo of Sagolband Moirang Leirak Akham Leikai, Y Ibungochouba alias Ibomcha (34) son of late Sanajaoba of Moirang Kampu Sajeb Maning Leikai, Ng Dhanaraj alias Naotu (31) son of Chauba of Sagolband Moirang Leirak Akham Leikai, Ch Boinao alias Priyokanta alias Demshan (28) son of Kulachandra of Langjing Achouba Maning Leirak (he acted as a watchman during attack at the residence of former CM's).
Two lady activists of the same outfit-Salam Ongbi Sosim (44) wife of one Chingthangkhomba of Ethai Leirak village, at present at Thangmeiband Hijam Dewan Leikai and R K Sushitra Devi daughter of late Sanatomba of Sagolband Bijoygobinda were also apprehended on January 19 and 20 respectively on the disclosure by the formerly arrested.
They were involved in transporting the grenade.
"From this investigation it is learnt that the crime was committed to extort certain amount of money in the form of percentage from the local area development fund of MLA Radhabinod", a police said.
The KYKL activist Chongtham Dev alias Devananda (29) son of Chourajit of Wangkhei Thambalkhong was arrested on January 16.He is actively involved in extortion activities.
Meanwhile, a combined team of Thoubal police commandos and troops of 21 AR apprehended a harbourer of KYKL activist identified as Angangjao alias Mayai Ibungo alias Moreh (34) son of S Tomlo of Nongmaikhong Awang Leikai yesterday at about 11.30 am from Nongmaikhong area.
