Legal awareness and literary campaign held

Urging to end the habitual practices of resolving criminal issues according to customary laws that normally free the accused after paying fines, a one day State level legal awareness and literacy campaign was organised by the Manipur State Legal Services Authority and Churachandpur District Legal Services Authority at YPA Headquarters Hall today where senior advocates campaigned for common law of the land, reports our correspondent.
Speaking at the function, advocate Siamzading Valte said,"Customs are indispensable but wherever it stands, conflicted with the common law.
Common law of the land should prevail so that issues are resolved justifiedly" .
He advised the people not to hesitate to seek legal help due to monetary limitations since the State would provide free legal services to the schedule tribes and scheduled castes.
W Joykumar, former deputy investigator, MGNREGA discussed various important provisions of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act.
He encouraged the job card holders to seek employment privately or in groups through proper format and channel to make the most use of the scheme.
Advocate Magaret spoke on domestic violence and women rights.
Justice Khwairakpam Nobin Singh, Judge High Court of Manipur; M Ibohal Singh District and Sessions Judge incharge, Churachandpur, Thangkhosuanmung Guite, chief of Hiangtam Lamka, police and civil officials, leaders of NGOs and civil society organisations also attended the function.
