Imphal, November 02 2010:
Students of History Department, Manipur University have denounced demolition of the western wall of the Sanathong of Langthabal (Canchipur) palace.
The Sanathong which was the gate of the royal palace during the reign of king Gambhir Singh (1825-1834) was demolished by the Department of Archeology, Government of Manipur between October 27 and October 29. In a complaint letter addressed to the Director General of the Archeological Survey of India, the History students lamented that the demolished Sanathong was a protected monument under the Manipur Ancient and Historical Monuments and Archeological Sites and Remains Act 1976.Saying that demolition of the monument was an act of cultural genocide, the students reminded that "we have an important responsibility to leave the monument to our descendents".
Even as the students requested the concerned department not to demolish the Sanathong, it felled into deaf ears.
Still, the students demanded that further demolition of any monuments which are cultural heritage of mankind should be stopped.
