Imphal, November 02 2010:
With exception to Imphal Municipal Council, the State Government has tentatively decided to hold the election to the eight other Municipal Councils and 18 Nagar Panchayats on December 18 .
According to an official source, the decision to hold the election next month has been taken in view of the fact that the current tenure of Municipal Councils of Jiribam, Nambol, Bishnupur, Ningthoukhong, Thoubal, Kakching, Mayang Imphal and Moirang as well that of the 18 Nagar Panchayats are due to expir by January next year.
As for the Imphal Municipal Council, its tenure will last till May next year, the source said, adding that as of now there is no definite decision of the Government to revoke the suspension of the Council for six months.
The State Election Commission would ensure that the election to the eight Municipal Councils and 18 Nagar Panchayats is held on December 18 or before the end of their current tenure and complete the entire election process within December itself so that the newly elected Councils can start functioning from January next year.
