Senapati, November 23 2016:
The United Naga Council (UNC) has strongly condemned the assault of an elderly Tangkhul man at the entrance gate of Namdulong village near Nagaram on November 21 evening by some youth who talked on communal lines.
Taking strong exception of the incident, the UNC in a statement warned that any attempt to wage violence on ethnic targeting the Nagas will not be tolerated.
The apex Naga body blamed the State Government for creating such an unfortunate incident.
The statement narrated that at round 7.10 pm some suspected Manipuri youth numbering around five descended from a car near Namdulong village gate opposite Nagaram and demanded to know the identity of an elderly person identified as L Daimond from Lambui village of Ukhrul district.
The elderly man who was on his mobile handset speaking to someone identified himself as a 'Naga' and soon the five youths began to land blows and use abusive language on the victim.
Those culprits also demanded to know the residence of the UNC president and location while adding that they are ready to harm the Nagas and its leaders.
The perpetrators left the scene snatching his mobile phone and coat, alleged UNC.
The UNC added that before the Manipur police commandos arrived at the site, the five youths shouted and pulled up a shop keeper and used communally abusive words which compelled the Namdulong village women to come out and protest.
Blaming the State Government for orchestrating such divisive and communal incidents, the UNC claimed that the Government has been communalising the Naga issue rather than resolving the present impasse which has created misunderstanding and social unrest in the State.
It strongly warned that any attempt to attack a single Naga will be deemed as attacking the whole Nagas for which the Manipur Government under O Ibobi Singh will be held responsible for any untoward consequences.
The Nagas will not remain mute but react accordingly with befitting response, it said.
