Imphal, March 07 2017:
Assam Rifles units deployed in the remote border areas of Manipur under the aegis of HQ IGAR (South) have been conducting relentless area domination and border sealing to ensure free, fair and incident free conduct of the 11th Manipur State Legislative Assembly elections, informed a statement issued by the PRO, HQs IGAR(South) today.
Based on the directions of the Election Commission of India, all assistance is being provided to the polling parties and CAPF personnel escorting the polling officials in the far flung areas along the Indo-Myanmar border in Ukhrul, Phungyar, Tengnoupal and Chandel districts to keep the spirit of democracy alive in every remote corner of the country, much against the nefarious designs of separatist UG groups.
Due to the alertness of the Assam Rifles units deployed under HQ 10 Sector Assam Rifles in Ukhrul and Phungyar districts, two major tragedies were averted on today wherein the UG groups were planning to target the polling officials and disrupt the election process.
In two separate cowardly incidents, the UG groups had planted IEDs near the polling booths at Aishi and Ashang Khullen.
The Assam Rifles jawans deployed in these areas under IGAR (South) disregarding their own safety have been facilitating the induction of CAPFs and polling parties by providing area domination and incidental protection.
While polling parties were being inducted to Aishi and Ashang Khullen today, two Assam Rifles jawans sustained grievous injuries due to IEDs.
The Assam Rifles upholding its motto 'Friends of Manipur', will continue to make sure that citizens in these areas can vote freely and exercise their franchise without fear or intimidation from these cowardly UG groups, the statement said.
