Protesters smash vehicles on NH 39

Imphal, January 30, 2011:
As many as 24 vehicles were smashed today on the second day of the NH 39, Imphal-Moreh section, bandh imposed by residents of Wangjing in protest against killing of a student hailing from the locality.
Escort personnel of a MLA fired some rounds to disperse the protestors blocking the MLA's route.
The JAC imposing the bandh has decided to relax it till February 2.It also decided to take back the dead body of the student, Narengbam Amitkumar.
24 vehicles which include 15 four wheelers, four trucks and five two-wheelers were damaged by protesters between Wangjing and Khongjom.
Windshields and body parts were smashed by the protesters.
The bandh was imposed to realise their demands which include the booking of the culprit(s) guilty of killing Amitkumar.
However, it was relaxed till February 2 following an assurance from the Chief Minister that the culprit(s) would be brought to book at the earliest, a statement of the JAC said.
The JAC reminded that if the government fails to fulfill their demands by February 2, the bandh will be resumed.
